Video: Sea Lion Charges Spearfisherman

Sea lion off Santa Barbara attacks freediver who was spearfishing.
Sharks are typically the animals that come to mind when you hear about an attack at sea.  But in this video, sharks are nowhere to be found as we see a sea lion charge a diver with mouth open and teeth showing.

The incident occurred on October 10th as freediver Chris Okamoto was spearfishing for yellowtail kingfish near Santa Barbara Island, which is approximately 38 miles off the mainland.

As we see in the video, a group of sea lions approach the area and can be seen swimming very close to Chris. Clearly one of the sea lions didn't approve of Chris being in its backyard and we see it strike out at Chris with its mouth wide open. Fast thinking Chris swung up the butt of his speargun and this was enough to make the sea lion retreat.

Chris told the Daily Mail, "I've had them do mock rushes before where they blow bubbles in your face, but this one came much closer and as soon as it rushed toward me, I swung the butt of my gun up and it stopped short."

"I wasn't sure if it was going to rush me again, so I swung the gun back up with the muzzle towards the group and they took off."
