Video: Kiteboarding Amongst the Florida Sharks

Here's a very cool video out of Matanzas Inlet, Florida where a kiteboarder affixed a GoPro camera onto his kite in an attempt to capture images of what might be in the water.  And the answer as to what was there on this day is quite simple...sharks and many more sharks.

The kiteboarder captures numerous shots of small to medium sharks moving about as his board skins across the water.  The sharks aren't pointed out in the video but they are quite easy to spot as the video roles on. On the negative side, you will have to role your head to keep up with the moving shots as the view does rotate with the kite.  But it is such a unique perspective, you won't mind.  Enjoy!

Hannah Mermaid Swims with a Whale Shark

Hannah Mermaid swims with a whale shark
Hannah Mermaid swims with whale sharks in an effort to bring awareness to the issue of shark finning.

She notes that "whale Sharks are gentle giants, friendly and docile despite their huge size" and although they are under pressure in some parts of the world, their situation in the Philippines has greatly improved over the years.

She states, "Less than a decade ago, the local population of whale sharks in the Philippines had been all but wiped out to satisfy demand for shark fins in China.

Video: The Shark Dinner Bell Rings Far and Wide in the Bahamas

We've all heard the saying 'build it and they will come."  Well that seems to be true with food and sharks as well.  Feed them, and they will come...and come...and then call their friends to come too.

Here's a video from Suart Cove's Dive Bahamas showing yet another dive tour featuring a lot of sharks...and I mean a whole sea full of sharks.

Do you think these sharks are getting just a tad accustomed to being fed?

24-Year-Old Surfer's Leg Severed in La Réunion Shark Attack

The Etang-Salé les Bains beach
A 24 year old local surfer was attacked by an unknown type of shark at Etang-Salé-les-Bains, on the south-west coast of the Island of Réunion, a French island located in the Indian Ocean.

The attack occurred at around 4:00pm while the surfer was about 20 meters off shore.  The surfer lost part of his right leg which was severed at his thigh. When he was brought to shore he was still conscientious and was transported to St. Peter hospital

Immediately following the attack, the Fisheries Committee initiated their post-attack procedures which call for several area fishing vessels to engage in targeted shark fishing operations in the immediate vicinity of the attack area.

Fishermen and whale sharks peacefully coexist in Cenderawasih Bay, Indonesia...but for how long?

Whale shark at Cenderawasih Bay - Shark Bay Films
The filmmakers at Shark Bay Film take a look at the unique bond that exist between whale sharks and Indonesian fisherman who peacefully coexist in one of the remotest bays on the planet, Cenderawasih Bay.

Local fisherman use pontoon boats to fish for small silvery bait fish known as ikan puri which they then dry in the sun.  Any excess fish caught is then fed to area whale sharks which cue up near the boats to share in the catch.  The fishermen feed the whale sharks morsels throughout the day in order to keep them around as they consider them to be good luck.  But will this harmonious existence be able to continue?

Pro Surfer Mark Healey Stiff Arms 12 Foot Tiger Shark

Mark Healey fends off aggressive tiger shark
Surfing Magazine has just posted this short video showing pro surfer Mark Healey stiff arming a 12 foot tiger shark.  The brief video caption jokingly refers to Mark as a part-time NFL running back.

Upon checking further, I found that the video was just used in an article released by Surfing Magazine discussing whether the growing practice of people riding sharks is a good thing or not.  (Sharks: To ride, or not to ride?)

In the article, they discuss with Mark about his thoughts on the practice as he has experience riding large sharks.  He notes that if you know what you are doing and can read the shark's body language, it is a manageable risk.  But he cautions, that there is still risk involved and that one has to be willing to accept it. And that's were the below video comes into play.

Shark bite victim Shane Mills. Pic from Maui Now video below.
On Wednesday, October 23, 2013, Shane Mills was swimming off of Waiehu on Maui, Hawaii when he suffered a minor shark bite.

He states in an interview with Maui Now that he was out about 100 yards in 10 feet of water when a four to six foot shark bit him on his lower back area and left leg. Shane was able to kick and elbow the shark causing it to swim off.

Shane notes that the shark didn't seem to bite him very hard but it did leave him with lacerations and ripped swim shorts.

Surfer Fights Off 12 Foot Shark in Kauai

Jeff Horton, a 25 year old surfer, had a close call with a 12 foot shark on Sunday off the North Shore of Kauai, Hawaii.

Jeff was about 200 yards offshore waiting to catch a wave when he noticed a dark shadow coming up from below his board.  At first he thought it was a ray with its dark upper side and white bottom but he quickly saw it was a shark and pulled his dangling feet out of the water.

The shark narrowly missed one of Jeff's feet as it clamped down on his board.  Jeff fell off the board and onto the shark and immediately began throwing punches with all he had.  As the shark thrashed, Jeff landed a solid hit on the shark's eye and that was enough to cause the shark to swim away.

Shower With the Sharks in Georgia

If you happen to be a guest at John Paker's lake house at Lake Sinclair in Georgia, you might have some frightful flashbacks to the movie Jaws when you go to use the guest shower.

John and his wife love to entertain and have people stay over and they soon found a need for an additional shower to accommodate their guests.  So when it came time to expand, John took his cue from his niece Karen Scarbrough, who was a huge fan of sharks.

Disturbing Video of Large Great White Being Taken to Market in Tunisia

Great white killed in Mahdia, Tunisia
A sad video has just appeared on LiveLeak which shows a very large great white being taken to market in Mahdia, Tunisia.

The video description was in broken English and it was difficult to understand.  But from what we can decipher, the shark weighed 3,000 pounds and was 13 feet (4 meters) in length.

The shark had been swimming 400 meters from shore in depths no greater than 7 meters and was in an area with floating fish cages being used to fatten blue fin tuna.  The cage operators felt the shark was a threat and subsequently, it was caught, killed and taken to market to be sold.

The small volcanic island is located in the Pacific Ocean 150 miles (240 kilometers) off the west coast of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula. The island is known for having wonderful visibility often providing divers with 125 – 150 foot vis in clear blue waters.

Video: Paddleboarder Tells Surfer to Put His Feet Up When 9 Foot Great White Approaches

The news these days is rather ripe with sightings of great whites off the California coast.  On our page, we've recently posted two California great white videos and now we have this new one which, in our opinion, is the biggest eye opener due to the actions of one surfer.

Great white off Manhattan Beach. Photo by
According to shark expert Patrick Douglas in a recent ABC News10 interview, he states that there are currently a good number of great whites feeding in the southern California area.  He states, "they're here in big numbers and this is that time of year where they're preying on seals, they're getting fat, they're getting ready for a big migration which happens in December and January."

So fast forward to the below video which was shot over a two day period on October 15th and 16th off Manhattan Beach in Los Angeles County, California.

Video: Catch & Release of Large Bull Shark in Florida Waters

BlacktipH Fishing catch & release large bull shark off Florida
BlacktipH Fishing posted this video showing them catching a large 400lb bull shark in 150 feet of water off the Florida coast.

They note that they fought the shark for about 20 minutes before landing it.  Once next to the boat, they rolled the shark over in an apparent attempt to get it into a calm, tonic immobile state.  They then used bolt cutters to cut the hook and the shark was released.

Photo: The Mighty Great White Shark

Carcharodon carcharias (also known as the great white, white pointer, and white shark) can be found primarily in the coastal surface waters of all the major oceans.  They typically can be found near offshore reefs, banks, shoals and in areas that have active seal, sea lion and walrus colonies.

Great White males typically reach maturity at 10.5 to 13 feet (3.2 to 4 meters) in length, while females average 14 to 16 feet (4.25 to 4.9 meters).  Their weight can be between 1,500 to 2,400 lb (680 to 1,080 kg) with females generally being larger than males..

Great white's have a varied diet but marine mammals, including dolphins, are their preferred menu item.  Also included on their regular menu are other sharks, fish, rays and sea turtles. Not making the dining list are marine birds.  Although marine birds will occasionally be attacked by a great white, they are typically rejected as prey and not consumed.

Video: California Whale Watchers Get Up Close with Explosive Great White

Talk about having a lucky day!  These fortunate whale watchers aboard a Dana Wharf Whale Watching cruise had a rare surprise this week when they encountered a large 12-14 foot great white riding their vessel's bow wave.

Although it is a short video at only 11 seconds, what makes it extra special is getting to see the explosive power of this formidable apex predator.

Paddleboarder's Video of Great White Swimming Under his Board in California

Great white swims under paddleboarder.
What happens when you go looking for a great white on your SUP board?  Well sometimes, you might find just find one.

Yesterday Mike Durand had heard that there were two sharks spotted off Manhattan Beach in south Los Angeles County, CA so he decided to go have a look for himself.

Using a GoPro mounted on his helmet, he captured these shots of a juvenile great white fairly close to shore. Although he went out there with the intent of finding the shark, when the shark decided to pass under his board (at the 45 second mark), he states that it 'scared the sh&t out of him."

Video: Angler Tries to Land 9 Foot Tiger Shark Off Florida with Busted Rod

9 foot tiger shark off Florida being landed by Paul Colbert
Fisherman Paul Colbert was in the process of reeling in a 9' tiger shark 30 miles off the Florida Coast when the powerful shark broke his fishing rod in half.

The video picks up at the point where Paul almost has the shark to the surface.  It doesn't indicate how long prior he had been fighting the fish.  When he does finally get the shark to the surface and gets a chance to see what is on the end of his 50lb mono fishing line, he let's out a "ohhhh, jeez" as he spots the 9 foot tiger for the first time.

California Surfer Captures Video of Shark Swimming Underneath Her Board

Shark swims underneath California surfer.
In what may be an occurrence that happens more often then some surfers like to think about, a California surfer in the waters off El Porto Beach in northern Manhattan Beach captured video of a shark swimming two feet below her.

Erica Henderson told CBS Los Angeles that she noticed something lurking nearby and flipper her surf camera underneath and that's when she saw the shark swimming below her board.

Video: Oceanic Whitetip Shark Sneaks Up on Diver

Oceanic whitetip shark in Red Sea
One of the rules in diving is to always be aware of your surroundings. This is not always easy as divers often get caught up in the beauty of their underwater surroundings.

Of course it even becomes more difficult to maintain your awareness when some stealthy fish sneaks up on your six (backside) in which you will most likely not know it is there until it decides to make its presence known or your dive buddy gets your attention.

Video: Small Angler Catches Small Shark But the Impact is Huge

In the heartwarming department, we have this wonderfully cute video from New South Wales, Australia.

A young angler, George, hooks a Port Jackson shark off Creswell which leads to a grand battle as he attempts to land the shark.  As he finally reels the shark in close enough to the dock for his dad to reach, the shark gives a quick shake and frees itself.

As the shark begins to swim off, we hear George yelling, "noooooo" to which his mother reassures him, "that's beautiful son because you couldn't bring him in anyway, bye-bye."

Mom then asks George what he thinks about his catch and George yells enthusiastically, "Yes, thank you!!"

Abalone Diver Attacked by Great White in Western Australia

Abalone diver
A 55-year-old abalone diver sustained shark bites to his torso and head earlier today in waters off the coast of Esperance in Western Australia.

The victim, Greg Pickering, is in serious but stable condition at Royal Perth Hospital.

Following the incident, the Department of Fisheries issued a 'catch and kill' order for the shark that attacked Mr. Pickering.

This is the second time Mr. Pickering has been attacked by a shark.  In 2004, he was bit twice in the calf by a 1.5 meter bronze whaler while spearfishing in WA.

For anyone who may have watched Dicovery Channel's Shark Week this year, they featured a story on the dangers of abalone diving in a segment called Great White Gauntlet:

Surfer Bitten by Great White in Northern California

Humboldt Bay - Wikipedia
A 45-year-old surfer was bitten by an 8 to 9 foot great white shark on Sunday while surfing near Humboldt Bay in Northern California.

The surfer, Jay Scrivner, was paddling on his board while waiting for a wave set when, according to a comment he made to the AP, a shark came 'out of nowhere' and bit his thigh.

Mr. Scrivner saw the teeth and nose of the shark and he took a swing while letting out a yell. The shark released Mr. Scrivner and his board and he was able to paddle to shore.

He received 30 stitches and is expected to make a full recovery.

Check out this shiver of sharks as they corral bait fish and then drive them up on shore.  The sharks then beach themselves and begin feasting on the fish as they furiously wiggle to get back into the water.

Check out the shark at the 1:15 mark.  That is one impressive shark and is clearly a well honed eating machine.

Video: Numerous Tiger Sharks Feed on Whale Carcass Off Cape Hatteras, NC

Tiger sharks feed on whale carcass off Cape Hatteras, NC
A whale carcass off the coast of Cape Hatteras, NC has the effect of ringing the dinner bell for a large shiver of sharks including numerous tiger sharks.

At least three separate people took video of the events and uploaded them to Youtube.  In one of the descriptions, the videographer states that there were between 30 to 40 sharks in the water.

The videos were all taken around 10 August 2013 and we have posted what we believe is the best of the group below (although I'd suggest watching with the sound on mute). The video includes some fantastic up close underwater shots and on a few occasions, you'll see the sharks bump the camera.  I assume the person was using a GoPro on a pole.  You can view the other videos by clicking the below links.

Question: What happens when a shark consumes a non-digestible item?

Shark stomach eversion
Earlier today we were posed with the following question by Ewan Duff via our FB page: If a shark attacked a swimmer in swim trunks and consumed the clothes, what would happen to the clothes in the shark's stomach?

Good question in that we often hear about sharks that are found with metal cans, licence plates and other non-digestible objects in their stomachs. So what happens when they do consume something that their system cannot process?

Video: Tiger Shark Eats Sea Turtle at Great Barrier Reef

One of the tiger shark's favorite foods is the sea turtle and they have adapted an efficient yet ruthless method for consuming the hard shell delicacy.

The tiger sharks will systematically bite off each flipper thus rendering the turtle immobile and helpless.  At this point, the shark can consume the remaining core by using it's heavy jaws and serrated teeth to tear through the hard shell.

Video: Julie Andersen Freedives with Oceanic Whitetip Shark

Shark Angel Julie Andersen swims with oceanic whitetip shark
In a video titled Black Swan, Julie Andersen, who is the founder of Shark Angels, engages in freedive 'dance' with a nine foot oceanic whitetip shark.  The purpose of the encounter was to help dispel the whitetip's reputation  as being a man eater and as being one of the most dangerous of all sharks.

We had previously posted a color version of this video which featured Ms. Andersen swimming with the whitetip mixed with segments of commentary from Ms. Andersen.  But in this version, we only see her and the shark and it is set in a black & white format which clearly sets a more dramatic tone.  It is quite visually stunning.

Video: Tourists on Great White Cage Dive Get Double Surprise

Great white hits cage in South Africa.
This group of great white shark tourists got a double surprise when a large great white first hit their cage head on and then followed it up with a hard tail slap.  It is quite clear from the audio in the video, the folks inside where shocked and thrilled with their close encounter.

It is not clear from the video if the bait handler pulled the shark towards the cage or if the shark swam at the cage after grabbing the bait.

Video: Fisherman Goes Extra Mile and Swims With Bull Shark to Revive It After Catch

A shark fisherman fishing at Charlie's Reef, which is an artifical reef made up of old railroad box cars 20 miles off Lee County, Florida, went the extra mile to help revive a bull shark that he had caught.

The fisherman landed a 300 pound bull shark after an apparent lengthy battle.  The shark was exhausted and they were having difficulty in reviving it.  The fisherman then jumped into the water and began swimming with the shark while holding onto it's tail end.
