Christmas Day Shark Bite In New Caledonia

Christmas day shark bite at New Caledonia - 2013.
On December 25, 2013, a 37-year-old man was bitten by a shark while snorkeling offshore near the village of Hienghene, which is located on the northeast section of the main island in New Caledonia.

According to officials, the victim was snorkeling when he sustained a serious shark bite injury to his foot. Nearby friends rushed to his aide and pulled him onto the beach where they applied a tourniquet to control bleeding.  The victim was then transported to the hospital where he underwent surgery.

At this time, it is believed that a bull shark was responsible for the bite.  Authorities have closed the beach until further notice.

The victim's name has been released by Les Nouvelles Caledoniennes.  He is identified as Loic.

The following video was posted on Youtube by The New Caledonian and shows the victim in the water immediately after the shark bite.  CAUTION: Graphic Video.
