He states in an interview with Maui Now that he was out about 100 yards in 10 feet of water when a four to six foot shark bit him on his lower back area and left leg. Shane was able to kick and elbow the shark causing it to swim off.
Shane notes that the shark didn't seem to bite him very hard but it did leave him with lacerations and ripped swim shorts.
Following the bite, Shane swam back to shore where he received treatment by paramedics. He then drove himself to the hospital.
