Video: A Minor Nurse Shark Bite During Belize Spearfishing Trip

Here's an informative video involving a spearfishing shark bite incident that recently occurred in Belize.  The video details what precipitated the bite and explains that although nurse sharks may appear harmless, they can become aggressive when searching for food.

On this dive with Captain Shark's Marine Center and Boatyard, one of the divers is bitten on the hand by a nurse shark while spear fishing. It is noted that at the time of the bite, the diver was holding the speargun by the point and the shark most likely confused her hand with a fish.

Following the bite, the video explains how to treat the wound and when to seek further medical assistance.

The video was posted by CaptainSharksBelize and is 4:53 in length.  The bite occurs at around the 2:50 mark but I highly recommend watching the complete video as they do an excellent job of pointing out the Dos and Don'ts of diving/fishing in the vicinity of sharks.

Video: Eating Rotted Shark Meat at the Thorrablot Festival.

While the idea of dining on rotted Greenland shark meat wouldn't appeal to most, in Iceland it is considered a time honored tradition.

In order to make the shark meat edible, they cure the rotting shark flesh for many months to help release the ammonia.

Once the meat is void (at least to some degree) of the ammonia, the shark is then served to a small group of diehards during the wintertime Thorrablot festival. The festival is a celebration of country's Viking heritage.

While a few of the older people have developed a taste for the meat, others will only eat a small nibble as a symbolic connection to their past.

Of course there are some people that one touch it. As one gentleman states in the video, "it taste and smells like piss."  That's good enough for me, I pass.

Video: Tiger Shark Caught in Japan

Tiger shark is caught by a fisherman in Japan. Once the shark is pulled ashore, it is tied to a truck and then dragged alive.

If someone decides they are not going to release their catch, then they need to be humane and dispatch the animal in a quick manner and not let it suffer a slow death.

Video: 'Shark Callers' of Paua New Guinea Catch Sharks

Here's a fascinating video showing how the 'shark callers' of Papua New Guinea are able to catch sharks using rather limited means.

The shark caller starts by stirring up the water with a noise-maker made of coconuts woven on a vine.  The chaotic noise is enough to attracts sharks that soon arrive to investigate.  Once a shark nears, the skilled hunter is able to draw
it even closer by using a small piece of bait on the end of a stick.

Once he is able to entice the shark near the surface, he then somewhat gently places a slip knot over the shark.  Attached to the slip knot is a wooden floater in the shape of a propeller which appears to confuse the the shark as it works to free itself from the entanglement.  At this point, the fisherman is able to spear the shark and pull it to his boat where it is quickly dispatched.

Video: New Zealand Kayak Fisherman Unintentionally Hand Feeds Shark

On Wednesday, we posted the video of Isaac Brumaghim who was kayak fishing in Hawaii when a large tiger shark breached the water directly behind his kayak. At the time we watched the video, it had just over 300 views. As of this morning, it now has over 4 million views and continues to quickly climb. It's clear to us, folks love a good kayak/shark video.

So to do our part to help feed the frenzy (pun intended), we thought we would share a cool video from 2011 which shows a group of New Zealand kayak fisherman who also had an unexpected surprise from a shark.

The group is fishing for kingfish when Jim Sammons lands a nice 40 pounder. As he is pulling the fish onto his yak, a shark erupts from below and rips the shark from Jim's hands. This is immediately followed by laughter and vocal shock from Jim and his fellow fisherman.

The shark appears at the 0:56 mark and it is replayed in slow motion a bit later. The video was posted by KayakFishingTales and the total length is 1:51.

Isaac Brumaghim kawakawa tuna fish tiger shark kayak fishing
The following video from Hawaii was posted on Youtube by Isaac Brumaghim and shows a kayak fisherman (presumably Isacc) pulling in a kawakawa (tuna) fish when a sizable shark breaches the water in an attempt to steal the fisherman's catch.

Clearly the kayaker was not expecting such a surprise and it takes him a several seconds to decompress from the shocking event.

The fishermen were aboard the vessel Hooked Up and per the vessel's website (, they will soon be releasing more details and a video.

Ten shark attacks in the past two years, three of them fatal. Now surfers are biting back, calling for a posse to hunt and kill the offending animals. Video: Diving with Tiger Sharks in the Bahamas

We come across quite a few videos from Tiger Beach in the Bahamas where one can dive without the safety of a cage with these massive apex predators. For obvious reasons, we don't post them all but instead try to pick the more unique ones.

This video features a very cool encounter with a small pod of dolphins and of course, some up close shots from the tiger encounter.

At the end of the video, the divers are unwinding on the boat when one individual displays her unique love of sharks - a collection of shark tattoos.

The video was posted on Youtube by DanBach69 and is 2:56 in length.

A fortunate diver at Grand Cayman was in the right place at the right time when he came across a nurse shark swimming with a yellow stingray in its mouth. At the 0:50 mark, the shark begins to violently shake its prey which allows smaller pieces to tear off.  The shark repeats the shaking at the 1:25 mark.
